The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded UC San Diego’s Triton magazine and the Advancement Operations and Campaign team with several honors this year for excellence in publications and design. The 2021 CASE District VII Awards of Excellence recognizes the best practices at educational institutions in the western United States.

GOLD – Writing – Profile: “The Epic Lives of Albert Lin”
Albert Lin, where to begin? A three-time alumnus (BA, MS, and PhD), this was the second time we’ve covered this larger-than-life explorer, and with his story of a tragic accident and leg amputation yet to be told, it was time to revisit the many lives of the legendary Lin in our “Epic”-themed issue.
SILVER – Publications Pivot: Dispatches from a Pandemic
We had big plans for a “fashion issue” in May 2020, but, COVID. Yet with alumni and students all handling these extraordinary conditions with the rest of the world, we wanted Tritons in their own words. These first-person essays were for anyone in the university community willing to share what they were going through, lending connection to distance.

BRONZE – Editorial Design: Imagine… What Home Could Be
Triton magazine was to make the debut announcement for a high-profile, monumental addition to campus—the university’s first Alumni Center, to be the centerpiece of Triton Pavilion, the new central “downtown” area on campus. Expectations were high and so was our ambition, resulting in our first gatefold cover, with a message that unfolded with possibility and potential.
