Letter from the Chancellor

Destination: UC San Diego

UC San Diego has always challenged our students to look deeper at the world around them, to collaborate and solve societal challenges. The same culture of curiosity that sparked nearly 60 years of groundbreaking innovation led us to develop the institution’s first-ever strategic plan. As a result—and with support from the Campaign for UC San Diego—our campus is undergoing a major physical, intellectual and cultural transformation.

Under construction now, the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood integrates much-needed living and academic space, enabling students to learn and live in a dynamic environment. New innovation centers such as the Institute of Arts and Humanities, the Center for Climate Change Impacts, and the Bioregional Center for Sustainability Science, Planning and Design foster campuswide collaboration to produce groundbreaking discoveries that improve human life.

The Koman Outpatient Pavilion now offers the best of clinical care and translational medicine in one location, improving health care for our community. The planned opening of new restaurants, retail and entertainment venues will complement campus destinations like Mandeville Center, Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, and The Stuart Collection to solidify UC San Diego as a cultural destination. And starting in 2021, a long-awaited connection to our local community opens with the Mid-Coast Trolley extension.

You are a part of the transformation as well. Our 200,000 alumni worldwide contribute to UC San Diego’s rising global reputation as a distinguished public research university. The world is taking notice of your creativity, achievement and incredible impact. Your success and visibility as Triton alumni are helping us attract the best and brightest from around the world. More than 99,000 freshmen and 19,000 transfer students applied for fall 2019 admission. We are now the second most popular choice among students applying to the University of California. They strive to emulate your success and be a part of our Triton community.

You play a crucial role in creating that community. Share your success stories with us and with your social networks, volunteer on one of our advisory boards, collaborate with our scholars and researchers, or simply visit your campus. I urge you to own the future of your university and celebrate your many connections to it. You are part of UC San Diego, as it is a part of you.
