Creating and Sustaining Community
In June, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke to 15,000 Tritons and supporters at UC San Diego’s All Campus Commencement. Her speech championed a commitment to dialogue, collaboration, diplomacy and public service, and underscored the strong sense of community Tritons build while studying at UC San Diego.
That sense of community is about to get even stronger. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Campaign for UC San Diego has reached the $2 billion milestone three years early. Thank you, Tritons. We could not have done it without the 39,000 alumni who have given since 2012. More than 75% of alumni donations benefit student support and success initiatives. The Campaign continues through June 30, 2022, so there is still time to give. Every contribution counts. More than 91% of donors to the Campaign have given less than $1,000.
We are proud of the progress we have made and are committed to following through—with laser focus—on the vision set forth in our Strategic Plan. UC San Diego is becoming a preferred destination for students, patients and the community.
And speaking of destinations, the new Alumni Center at Triton Pavilion is in the final design phase. Breaking ground in summer 2020 and slated to open in spring 2023, Triton Pavilion will include the “Story of UC San Diego,” a museum-quality exhibit detailing the 60-plus years of our unique history. It is sure to bring back fond memories of your cozy campus by the sea.
And that’s what we hope you’ll experience when you visit the new Alumni Center. Even through all the physical changes to campus, you can still smell the ocean and the eucalyptus trees and feel the coziness of the university you remember and love so well.
You are the holders of this institution’s fond memories. Come home, share them and keep UC San Diego cozy throughout its continuing evolution. This is your university. You play the primary role in creating and sustaining our community. Thank you.
